Governed metrics
A governed metric is a definition your workspace agrees on — "Activation rate", "Weekly active accounts" — with a name, an owner and a version. Dashboards, alerts and Ask in English use it by name, through one path, so two people asking get the same number.
Create one
- Build the analysis in Insights and save it.
- On the Insights list, choose Promote to metric. The insight's formula becomes the metric's definition; give it a key, a description in plain words (the AI reads this), a unit, and what it is measured over.
- Take ownership and Publish. A metric without an owner cannot be published — someone has to answer for the number.
Changing the name, description or formula creates a new version; the previous one is kept, and anything pinned to it keeps showing it with a "definition changed" notice.
Use it
- Home › North Star — mark one published metric as the North Star and it appears at the top of Home over the selected range.
- Alerts — an alert can watch a governed metric instead of a built-in one; it is evaluated through the same path as the tile.
- Ask in English — when your question is a governed metric ("what's our activation rate this month?"), the answer uses the governed definition and says so.
The governed-metric chip (shield icon, name, version) marks a number that comes from the agreed definition; hover shows the definition, version and owner.
